The Novel Factory also has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novel-software.com\/faqs\">helpful FAQ page<\/a> for any questions you might have that aren't covered in this article. As long as you are connected to the Internet, the software will continually save and backup your work, and you can switch from laptop to phone to PC and back again seamlessly. And if you\u2019re not connected to the Internet, you can use the downloaded version and your data is saved locally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s find out more about the features The Novel Factory has to offer\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Road Map<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing that pops up on your screen when logging into The Novel Factory software is \u201cThe Roadmap.\u201d This is a series of videos and guiding text that walks you through every step of your novel, from outlines to characters to writing your first draft and even <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/book-editors\/\">editing and publishing<\/a> your book. For a new author, or for any writer who needs some extra help understanding plot basics, this is a fantastic series of guiding videos. I would\u2019ve preferred more on the craft since the plotting sections were pretty detailed about how to plot. It would follow that the writing sections should have more info on how to write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the \u2018Get Published\u2019 section of the roadmap, both forms of publishing\u2013traditional and self-publishing\u2013were tackled, but it seemed to me that the traditional section was slightly more detailed. I would\u2019ve liked to have seen more resources on the self-publishing side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, navigating the roadmap got a bit irritating\u2013some of the videos took a while to pop up on the screen when I cycled between the different sections. Overall, however, I think this is a fantastic tool to help new writers get started understanding the basics of writing a book, editing it, and getting it published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Outlining<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here comes the fun part! We get to take a look at the cool features The Novel Factory has on offer. Outlining or \u2018Planning,\u2019 as it's called in the side pane, is where we\u2019ll start. So, if you\u2019re new to plotting, you can follow along. As you can see below, you\u2019re able to add new chapters and scenes. You can stick to the roadmap, use your own templates, use the guidance from the preloaded templates, or just create an entire plot from scratch with no template at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While everything is organized into acts for fiction authors, it\u2019s still possible for <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/e2-keyword-mastery-nonfiction-fiction-authors\/\">nonfiction authors<\/a> to get use out of this section because they\u2019ll be able to upload their own templates. But to be clear, this program is very much geared toward fiction authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Character Creation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Character creation is one of the most important parts of writing a novel\u2013they\u2019re the driving forces of the plot. The Novel Factory has an entire \u2018Characters\u2019 section set aside for creating your characters. Let\u2019s take a closer look at what they have on offer here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since you\u2019re only ever working on one novel at a time in the software, every character you create is associated with that novel. That\u2019s great for distraction-free writing. If you want to create a series, then you can carry the characters over between novels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve added a character in the \u2018Characters\u2019 section, you can do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Input their basic info, including their background, appearance, motivation role, and family information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upload an image or avatar of the character<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write an introduction for your character so you can familiarize yourself with them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Note down their voice details, including speech patterns, vocabulary, whether they\u2019re assertive or passive, and so much more<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select a personality type for your character (very cool\u2013you can select a Myers-Briggs type) and fill in details about them, like fears, motivation, and traits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Answer a provided questionnaire to better get to know your character<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete a viewpoint synopsis\u2013For every scene the character is in, whether they are actively participating or not, you can write up their thoughts so you know exactly how they\u2019d react to the events unfolding in front of them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write up a history for your character<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put down any notes you might have that aren\u2019t already covered in your creation screen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image shadow\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pasted-image-0-9.png\" alt=\"Character creator in Novel Factory\" class=\"wp-image-36260\" style=\"width:500px\" width=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pasted-image-0-9.png 707w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pasted-image-0-9-245x300.png 245w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pasted-image-0-9-20x24.png 20w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pasted-image-0-9-29x36.png 29w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pasted-image-0-9-39x48.png 39w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Another cool feature:<\/strong> When creating your character, you\u2019re asked what role they serve. The following roles are provided:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Protagonist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nemesis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ally<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Antagonist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mentor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Love Interest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Major<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Group<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But, and this is pretty awesome, you can go to your account settings and actually create new <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/character-archetypes\/\">character role types or archetypes<\/a>. That means you have complete creative control over which <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/types-of-characters\/\">types of characters<\/a> you want to create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Novel Factory\u2019s character creation system is intuitive and fun. I would happily use it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>World\/Universe Creation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>World or universe creation is a big deal for fantasy and sci-fi writers especially. I love fantasy and sci-fi books, and every time I review software like this, I\u2019m always on the lookout for features that might make world creation easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Locations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Novel Factory\u2019s world creation section can be found under the \u2018Locations\u2019 tab. When uploading a location, you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Add basic information about the place<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Name it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and sensations associated with it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upload a picture of it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For world-building, I didn\u2019t think this was particularly detailed. You can add a bunch of locations, but you can\u2019t really move them around or list them under one grand location. The Novel Factory puts emphasis on <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-write-faster\/\">writing more<\/a> than one draft, but if you\u2019re the type of writer who prefers to write one, edit, then get it proofread and published, there\u2019s room to do that in the software too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a lot going on in the manuscript writing area of the software. The main features, however, are the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A \u2018page\u2019 interface to write your text in<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A scene list along the left, where you can reorder scenes and chapters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A related info sidebar on the right which shows all linked info, such as characters, plot events, weather, date and time etc<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quick access statistics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn Back Time &#8211; version history &#8211; let\u2019s you see earlier versions of that scene<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The scenes system seemed overly complicated to me\u2013I think that\u2019s because it\u2019s so packed with features for authors to take advantage of. I felt like it could have been streamlined a bit better\u2013if you\u2019ve already written a plot for the scene, you should be able to pull it up on the screen, or create a split-screen, rather than having to write out your scene overview again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of just free-writing in one giant draft, you have to create scene \u2018units\u2019. There\u2019s also a subplot manager. The roadmap is awesome, with loads of valuable information. This software is obviously not designed for nonfiction authors\u2013it\u2019s right there in the name\u2013but you could probably use it to outline your non-fiction work and organize your story as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the basic price, you can plot and write your entire first novel, but if you want to continue writing loads of series, you'll have to upgrade\u2013unless you plan on deleting completed or published novels (you'll no longer have them as a frame of reference then). The standard subscription is probably the best, and you get the desktop app included in the package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It all depends on what you\u2019re using the software for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authors of genre fiction who aren\u2019t focused on major world-building and who need advice on how to plot a story would get a lot from the basic or standard subscription plans of The Novel Factory. It does provide a wealth of information and it's nice to have everything stored in one place. If you want to world-build, you might be better off with software like <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/campfire-write-review\/\">Campfire<\/a>, and if you prefer no hand-holding in your plotting process, <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/scrivener-plotting-feature-review\/\">Atticus<\/a> is probably your best bet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, I found the online version of the software very easy to use, navigate, and understand. That's a big plus in my books\u2013it's never fun to get stuck because you're not sure where to click next\u2026 that's a surefire way to sap your creativity mid-outline or draft!
