Of course, it doesn\u2019t just miraculously happen, but after having published over 20 books I have now devised a fool-proof recipe any author can (and should) follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First things first, let's establish credibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first time I scored 100+ reviews was for my 16<sup>th<\/sup> children\u2019s book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Cinderellas-Secret-Slipper-Classic-Modern-ebook\/dp\/B00S5AB1J6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Cinderella\u2019s Secret Slipper<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has been one of the highlights of my <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-publish-childrens-book\/\">children\u2019s book publishing<\/a> career. I started on a smaller scale, aiming first for 20 reviews, then for 50 and slowly aiming for 100 for this book. It took me a couple years to get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So yes, good old hard work pays off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what if you have no following and you\u2019re about to publish your first book?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simple&#8230;just follow my laid out strategy below and see exactly how I got 100+ reviews for my latest book,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Descendant-Guardians-Worlds-Book-ebook\/dp\/B01CACV7LG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The Descendant<\/a>, <strong>using a <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-choose-a-pen-name\/\">pen name<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>no pre-established platform<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"toc\">\nIn this article you will learn: \n<ol><li>How to create your book launch timeline.<\/li><li>10 places to scout for reviews.<\/li><li>Where not to go in search of reviews.<\/li><li>How to incentivize your reviewers.<\/li><li>The technology behind it all.<\/li><li>How you can deepen your knowledge.<\/li><\/ol>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting 100+ reviews isn't a waiting game, and requires strategy as well and defined planning. &nbsp;Therefore, to do this right, we'll need to start with a broad overview of the steps, move into the all important ways to get reviews and build lasting connections, the do's and don'ts, and finally end with tools and aids for increasing your results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we dive in I wanted to quickly mention <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kindlepreneur.com\/click\/storyorigin\" rel=\"nofollow\">StoryOrigin<\/a>. I learned it the hard way that only about 1 in 3 people who say they will review your book, will follow through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to get 300 people on your launch team, <strong>you need to contact at least 900<\/strong>, but probably more. Even before you ask your first reviewer for their review, you want to present your book in the best possible light. Here a couple to help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Kirkus<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/readersfavorite.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Readers\u2019 Favorite<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forewordreviews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Foreword Reviews<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lj.libraryjournal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Library Journal<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another trick with these is to highlight a good review on your Amazon Author page or in the Editorial Review section of your Amazon sales page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-blog-tours\">Blog tours<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These can be very helpful but they need to be planned well and in advance. You can either go the \u201cdo-it-yourself\u201d route and contact bloggers one by one \u2013 but it will be very time-consuming, or you can use the services of a company which specializes in this. This could be a really good strategy to create buzz for your book, especially if you\u2019re just starting out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you choose to do a blog tour yourself, Dave's got a great article on <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/the-authors-guide-to-guest-posting-and-increasing-traffic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">author guest posting<\/a> and how to find the right blog <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/book-marketing\/\">for your market<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-networking-with-the-big-guys-in-your-field\">Networking&nbsp;with the big guys&nbsp;in your field<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is nothing more powerful then connecting with top people in the field, niche or genre and getting their stamp of approval for your book. &nbsp;They can help in many ways such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Creating a highly converting testimonial<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using their platform or email list to promote your book<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simply leaving a review &#8211; one down 99 to go!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this tactic is best done early. It would be great if you could read, follow and comment on blogs which you\u2019d like to have your book featured on. When the blogger recognizes you from your activity, they will be much more likely to feature your book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, don't start with a &#8220;Hi, nice to meet you, will you support my blog.&#8221; &nbsp;Here's a great article with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/zak-mustapha\/215-influencers-experts-t_b_9656556.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">top influencers giving you the do's and don'ts to networking<\/a>. &nbsp;You might recognize a name or two in there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-amazon-top-reviewers\">Amazon Top Reviewers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Believe&nbsp;it or not, but there is a whole subculture of reviewers who are fighting for the best spots <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/review\/top-reviewers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on the reviewers\u2019 leaderboards<\/a>. No, really, there are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These weekend warriors of Amazon reviews look for opportunities to keep up their ranks by writing well thought out reviews to boost numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key is to find the ones who have reviewed books in your niche or genre. &nbsp;You'll get a better conversion rate if you do.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"728\" height=\"239\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Top-Amazon-Reviewer-Tags.png\" alt=\"Top Amazon Reviewer Tags\" class=\"wp-image-1834\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Top-Amazon-Reviewer-Tags.png 728w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Top-Amazon-Reviewer-Tags-300x98.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-contacting-reviewers\">Contacting Reviewers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Certain Amazon reviewers choose to allow their email address or website to be shown in their review account. &nbsp;Therefore, you can go to books in your niche, and check to see if anyone who left a review allows for their email address to be shown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea is that once you've collected the emails of all of these reviewers, you would contact them and ask if they would like to review your book as well &#8211; usually by giving a free copy. &nbsp;To learn more about how to do that, then check out the Kindlepreneur <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-get-book-reviews-with-no-blog-no-list-and-no-begging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article on exactly that<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, that process can be tedious. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, there's one tool that will make the process a little easier, and it's called <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/readerscout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ReaderScout<\/a>. ReaderScout is a free plugin that will track when you get new reviews of your book. This makes it much easier for you to know when your ARC readers, for example, have actually left their review. But you can pay to promote your book to readers who are likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-get-your-email-subscribers-to-leave-quality-reviews-legitimately\/\">leave reviews.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.selfpublishingreview.com\/spr-bestseller-book-packages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Self-Publishing Review<\/a> is a good example of a service that sells email list promotions with the goal of bringing in more sales and new unbiased reviews. It\u2019s where you will find your most passionate readers and die-hard fans. While you may be receiving a legitimate offer, my first impulse is to say \u201cno\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paying someone for doing the dirty work may be tempting, especially if you have no idea how to get those reviews, but it\u2019s much wiser to learn the \u201chow\u201d and get someone to do the work for you. That\u2019s where <a href=\"https:\/\/thecommoncentsclub.com\/virtual-assistant-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Virtual Assistants<\/a> come in handy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-incentivize-your-reviewers\">How to incentivize your reviewers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-you-can-and-can-t-do\">What you can and can\u2019t do<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t pay anyone to review your book. Amazon clearly says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe do not permit reviews or votes on the helpfulness of reviews that are posted in exchange for compensation of any kind, including payment (whether in the form of money or gift certificates), bonus content, entry to a contest or sweepstakes, discounts on future purchases, extra product, or other gifts.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The sole exception to this rule is when a free or discounted copy of a physical product is provided to a customer up front. In this case, if you offer a free or discounted product in exchange for a review, you must clearly state that you welcome both positive and negative feedback. If you receive a free or discounted product in exchange for your review, you must clearly and conspicuously disclose that fact.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you can have reviewers enter a drawing <strong>if it\u2019s open to non-reviewers as well<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-works-when-trying-to-incentivize\">What works when trying to incentivize<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Paperback copies of your book<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signed copies of your book<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A set of books by different authors in your genre<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An Amazon gift card &#8211; easy to deliver<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Numerous smaller value Amazon gift card<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Something that pertains to your book or genre<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let's dig a little more into that last point. &nbsp;Imagine that you're writing a fantasy book with a female target demographic. &nbsp;Don't you think a John Snow bobble head would get your target fans to click and sign up?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Book-Incentives-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Book Incentives\" class=\"wp-image-1835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Book-Incentives-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Book-Incentives.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">He knows nothing about this book&#8230;but hey, I'll take it!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-doesn-t-work\">What doesn\u2019t work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be surprised when you hear me say that big value prizes like iPads or kindles don\u2019t really do the trick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will get a large number of people who will leave a review only because they want the shiny gadget and then they will unsubscribe from your mailing list altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You want to reward your reviewers by a larger number of smaller prizes. I usually have one big prize which is a $100 gift card and numerous smaller prizes ranging between smaller value gift cards and books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kevin Kruse has a GREAT article about this after having&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/authorjourneyto100k.com\/i-just-lost-719-on-one-book-launch-tactic-ouch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">learned this lesson the hard way<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-technology-behind-it-all\">The technology behind it all<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-email-marketing-provider\">Email marketing provider<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally, you want to get your reviewers on a mailing list, so that you can send them bulk messages. This means that you need to sign up for an account with <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/free-mailerlite-for-authors-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mailerlite<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/aweber-vs-mailchimp-vs-getresponse-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MailChimp, AWeber, GetResponse<\/a> or another service you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing I do when I reach out to potential reviewers is direct them to a landing page (see below) so that they sign up themselves and get on my list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Never sign up people manually even if you have their email address. It will usually just consist of a box where people give away their name and email address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where you entice your new reviewers to sign up in order to get a free review copy. As soon as they subscribe they get an email with a link to the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-copy\">Copy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There remains the matter of what and how to write to your reviewers. As long as you stick to the \u201cwhat to say\u201d and \u201chow to say it\u201d guidelines at the beginning of this article, you won\u2019t get into any trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I have become quite the expert on getting reviews now.
