The common points of view from which <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/book-writing\/\">an author can<\/a> narrate a story are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1st person POV <\/strong>uses the pronouns \u201cI\u201d and \u201cwe.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2nd person POV<\/strong> uses the pronoun \u201cyou.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>3rd person POV <\/strong>uses the pronouns \u201cshe,\u201d \u201che,\u201d \u201cthey,\u201d and \u201cit.\u201d\n<ul>\n<li><strong>3rd person limited<\/strong> is when the narrator only knows the thoughts of one person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>3rd person omniscient<\/strong> is when the narrator knows more than the thoughts of just one person.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>4th person POV<\/strong> uses indefinite pronouns like &#8220;one,&#8221; &#8220;oneself,&#8221; &#8220;someone,&#8221; &#8220;anyone.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Inconsistent point of view is one of the top things a professional editor has to proofread and correct. If that mistake makes it through to readers, they may leave negative reviews about how unprofessional and confusing the book is. POV is necessary to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article details how point of view functions, which POV you should use, and examples of each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are the points of view in a story?<\/strong> Points of view are literary terms that refer to the person who tells a story. This narrator usually tells the story from 1st person, 3rd person omniscient, or 3rd person limited point of view. It is the most traditional and the least distracting for readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3rd person can be broken up into <strong>omniscient <\/strong>and<strong> limited<\/strong> perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-third-person-omniscient\">Third Person Omniscient<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The third-person omniscient point of view is when the narrator (still referred to by \u201che,\u201d \u201cshe,\u201d or \u201cit\u201d) knows more than a single character\u2019s thoughts and feelings. Usually, this omniscient narrator knows <em>everything<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This perspective was more common in classical literature, such as Leo Tolstoy\u2019s <em>War and Peace<\/em>. It is less common in today\u2019s novels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authors would often \u201cjump heads\u201d \u2014 offer thoughts and feelings for more than one character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m also thinking of <em>Moby Dick<\/em>, in which Herman Melville often broke from the narrative and described a tangential concept of which the character(s) have little understanding. Famous examples include <em>The Great Gatsby<\/em> and the <em>Harry Potter<\/em> series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 3rd person limited perspective, you cannot head hop within a scene. Hopping into more than one character\u2019s head is when you describe multiple people\u2019s inner thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about J.K. Rowling\u2019s <em>Harry Potter<\/em>. You experience the story through Harry\u2019s third-person narration, including his internal motivations and silent feelings, but you don\u2019t know precisely what Ron and Hermione are really thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ernest Hemingway\u2019s <em>For Whom the Bell Tolls<\/em> used a unique limited omniscient narrator. The narrator could read multiple characters\u2019 thoughts, but only one at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since HBO\u2019s <em>Game of Thrones<\/em> and the accompanying book series, writing multiple third-person limited POVs within one book has become increasingly popular. However, authors may switch the narrator between scenes or chapters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you intend to use multiple narrators, ensure readers do not get confused about the POV. Clearly delineate where the POV switches. If readers get confused, you\u2019re opening the door for negative reviews, and we don\u2019t want that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you really want multiple POVs, George R.R. Martin is the exception to the following <strong><em>rule<\/em><\/strong>: Don\u2019t use more than 3-6 narrators in a story. Third-person limited perspective is also the most common POV used in <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/e57-how-to-make-a-childrens-book\/\">children\u2019s books<\/a>, especially stories for kids aged 3 and up. This could help immediately connect young readers to your main character (like Katniss in <em>Hunger Games<\/em>, or Ishmael in <em>Moby Dick<\/em>, or Hemingway\u2019s <em>The Sun Also Rises<\/em>) \u2014 as long as they\u2019re well-written, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, beware. First-person narrative can easily sound whiny and unlikable. Too much introspection feels unnatural and unrelatable. (I\u2019m looking at you, Bella from <em>Twilight<\/em>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reviews and blog posts may be written in the first person. When I say, \u201cI recommend this,\u201d I\u2019m speaking in the first person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"offer-box\">Pro tip: If you\u2019re writing in first person POV, you probably shouldn\u2019t write \u201cthought bubbles\u201d in which you italicize a thought. You can even attach a <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/dialogue-tags\/\">dialogue tag<\/a> without quotation marks. Since the prose is told in 1st person POV, every non-quote is essentially a personal thought.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-first-person-point-of-view-examples\">First Person Point of View Examples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cMuch to my surprise, I liked the truck Charlie bought me.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI <strong>recommend Scrivener <\/strong>because it\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/best-book-writing-software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">best word processor<\/a> on the market.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWe gave him five of our best pineapples.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<center><a class=\"buy-button\" href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/first-person\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn More About First Person<\/a><\/center>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-second-person-point-of-view\">Second Person Point of View<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>2nd person point of view uses second-person pronouns like \u201cyou\u201d and \u201cyour\u201d as well as third-person POV words like \u201chers,\u201d \u201cthey,\u201d and \u201citself\u201d \u2014 but not \u201cI\u201d or \u201cus.\u201d In this uncommon POV, the narrator is usually an unspoken \u201cme\u201d talking to the spoken \u201cyou.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a strange POV and is very rarely used in literature.<em> Bright Lights, Big City <\/em>by Jay McInerney is probably the most famous example. <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-long-short-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Short stories<\/a> and short-form creative writing assignments are easier to incorporate 2nd person perspective into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, blog posts and self-help books are often written in the second person. If the narrator never mentions \u201cI\u201d or \u201cme\u201d but <em>does <\/em>mention \u201cyou\u201d and \u201cyourself,\u201d it\u2019s technically told in the 2nd person perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also think of text-based games, where it tells you that you\u2019ve come upon a door and asks you what you want to do. The fourth person perspective is a more recent development of modern storytelling.
