Epigraphs are increasingly common among various writers and genres. They can exist in the front matter of the book, or before each chapter. They lend your book a sense of gravitas, a feeling that it is connected to something deeper and wiser. If you are writing nonfiction, the epigraph(s) lend credibility to your subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet, if your epigraph is poorly chosen or the formatting is unprofessional, it will throw readers off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, an epigraph is one of the first things that readers see. If it does not look right, or doesn't have relevance to the subject matter, it will likely lead to some negative reviews of your entire book, regardless of the content's quality. And all of that could be avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, the rules for good formatting and proper use of epigraph are relatively simple. If you follow the advice in this article, you shouldn't have any problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, what exactly is an epigraph and how do you write one? Though often confused with an epitaph (an inscription on a tombstone), an epithet  (a descriptive phrase or adjective), or an <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/epilogue\/\">epilogue<\/a> (the final piece of a novel), an epigraph is something unique to all of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Want to know more? Over 10 years so far, and counting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that's not the real reason, because there are plenty of authors who have lots of experience, but know next to nothing about the different parts of a book, or book formatting in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The real reason you should trust me is because I actually created my own formatting software that solved all my problems. I called it Atticus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this isn't meant to be a sales pitch. I just want to make sure it's clear that I know what I'm talking about. The amount of research that went into not only formatting my own books, but also creating a formatting software is huge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I researched everything, which led me to learn all about every. single. part. of. a. book. And there were a lot more than I realized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And of course, that includes Epilogues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if all that makes sense, hopefully you'll come along with me as show you everything I've learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-an-epigraph\">What Is an Epigraph?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An epigraph is a quote, phrase, or poem that appears at the beginning of a text. Some authors also use epigraphs before sections or even chapters. The best epigraphs give the reader a glimpse into the tone or theme of the book or provide some context for the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This literary device can be <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/book-writing\/\">used in literature<\/a>, academic writing, or even to open a short story or an essay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-epigraph-vs-epigram\">Epigraph vs Epigram<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These two literary terms are often confused &#8212; and with good reason. But, they are different, as you'll see below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An epigram<\/strong> is a brief humorous statement expressing a single thought. Epigrams are often satirical in nature and may be considered poetry since they're often written in verse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An epigram <em>can<\/em> be used as an epigraph when placed in quotation marks after the title page of a book or at the beginning of a text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-some-epigraph-examples\">What are Some Epigraph Examples?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following examples glimpse the wide range of unique epigraphs various authors use for their books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-stand-by-stephen-king\">The Stand by Stephen King<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Stephen King uses epigraphs in many of his books, usually before each new section. However, in <em>The Stand<\/em>, King doesn\u2019t just quote existing books, he quotes song lyrics.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image shadow\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/the-stand-book-cover-182x300.jpg\" alt=\"Stephen King's The Stand book cover.\" class=\"wp-image-19329\" style=\"width:182px;height:300px\" width=\"182\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/the-stand-book-cover-182x300.jpg 182w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/the-stand-book-cover-620x1024.jpg 620w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/the-stand-book-cover-768x1268.jpg 768w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/the-stand-book-cover-930x1536.jpg 930w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/the-stand-book-cover-1241x2048.jpg 1241w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/the-stand-book-cover.jpg 1260w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 182px) 100vw, 182px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The book begins with quotes from songs by Bruce Springsteen, Blue Oyster Cult, and Country Joe and the Fish. But he doesn\u2019t end there; he also quotes the poet Edward Dorn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All four quotes add their own flair to the novel and provide the reader a glimpse into the theme of the book. Another epigraph later in the novel quotes a Larry Underwood song. If you\u2019ve read the book, you know that Larry Underwood is a major character in the novel, a musician in the fictional world King has created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, your epigraph doesn\u2019t have to be from a real person; it can be fictional. And this brings me to my next example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-malazan-book-of-the-fallen-by-steven-erikson\">The Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Steven Erikson\u2019s fantasy series <em>The Malazan Book of the Fallen<\/em> features fictional quotations in the form of poems written by fictional characters in his expansive universe. Erikson\u2019s fictional epigraphs use poetry to set the mood and give the reader a more textured vision of the world he has created.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image shadow\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gardens-of-the-moon-book-cover-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"Steven Erikson's Gardens of the Moon, book cover\" class=\"wp-image-19332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gardens-of-the-moon-book-cover-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gardens-of-the-moon-book-cover.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Long before Erikson wrote <em>The Malazan Book of the Fallen<\/em> series, J.R.R. Tolkien did something similar in the<em> Lord of the Rings<\/em> books, starting each book with the same poem, featuring the famous lines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c\u2026One ring to rule them all, One ring to find them,<br>One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-sympathizer-by-viet-thanh-nguyen\">The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/prize-winners-by-category\/219\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pulitzer Prize-winning<\/a> novel by the Vietnam-born author and professor is a great traditional epigraph example. This powerful and gripping novel begins with a brief quotation from Friedrich Nietzsche:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cLet us not become gloomy as soon as we hear the word \u2018torture\u2019: In this particular case there is plenty to offset and mitigate that word &#8211; even something to laugh at.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>-Friedrich Nietzsche, On the Genealogy of Morals<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image shadow\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/the-sympathizer-book-cover-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen\" class=\"wp-image-19336\" style=\"width:200px;height:300px\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" title=\"shadow\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/the-sympathizer-book-cover-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/the-sympathizer-book-cover.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Even if you aren\u2019t sure what <em>The Sympathizer<\/em> is about, the short quotation gives you a glimpse at the tone of the story to follow. It helps to prepare the reader for what is to come and even piques a little curiosity by referencing this well-known literary work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-write-an-epigraph\">How to Write an Epigraph<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As you know by now, <strong>utilizing an epigraph is usually a matter of choosing the right one<\/strong>, not so much writing one. It\u2019s ultimately up to you whether you use one or not. As King, Erikson, and Tolkien have shown us in their books, you can write your own poetry, quote a song, or make up an epigraph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can quote a speech, an ancient text, a play, or just about anything you want. But it\u2019s a good idea to get permission to use the quotation and to format the epigraph properly. Here are some tips to do so:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Indent it from the left just like you would a block quotation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure to use quotation marks around the phrase.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under the block quote, flush right and with an em dash, should be the author's name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Literary epigraphs mostly follow this formatting, but there are always exceptions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get permission to use the quote if necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are placing an epigraph at the front of your work, make sure it is ordered correctly (see below)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are formatting in a program like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-format-a-book-with-word\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microsoft Word<\/a>, and already have your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/book-sizes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trim size<\/a>, margins, gutter margins, font licenses (be sure you have the commercial license for all fonts, most people don't), then formatting the epigraph should be relatively simple. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, a program like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/Atticus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Atticus<\/a>&nbsp;will help to do this for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only will it take care of the trim sizes, gutter margins, and page numbers all automatically, but it will also create beautifully <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-format-a-book\/\">formatted books<\/a> with a consistent design.&nbsp;<em>And<\/em>&nbsp;you won't have to worry about any lawsuits from the fonts you use, which might get you into trouble if you're using your own fonts with MS Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-getting-permission-to-use-a-quote\">Getting Permission to Use a Quote<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While most people probably won\u2019t mind (and may even be flattered) that you chose a quote from their work, it\u2019s always best to get permission. You\u2019ll need to seek out the holder of the copyright to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.janefriedman.com\/sample-permission-letter\/#:~:text=If%20you're%20seeking%20permission,author's%20literary%20agent%20or%20estate.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ask for permission<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if the work you wish to quote is in the public domain, you should be in the clear to use it in your book. Laws vary from country to country, so it\u2019s a good idea to do a bit of research before putting the quote in your book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-comes-after-the-epigraph\">What Comes After the Epigraph?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An epigraph can exist in multiple places in your book, but if you are using an epigraph in the front matter, it should be the last thing you have before you start the main chapters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here's the most common formatting order for the front matter of a book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-write-a-book-title-page\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Title Page<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/book-copyright-page-examples-ebook\/\">Copyright Page<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Table of Contents (i.e. chapter headings)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dedication Page<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acknowledgments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-write-a-foreword-for-a-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Foreword<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-write-the-preface-of-a-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Preface<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Epigraph<\/strong> &lt;&lt;&lt;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Not every book has each of these elements. Again, it\u2019s up to you as the author to decide which ones you want to include. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Pro Tip:<\/strong>&nbsp;If you're unsure what order to put your front matter in,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/Atticus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Atticus<\/a>&nbsp;has you covered.
