But did you know that you can also format a book using it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, it\u2019s a better word processor than many others, such as Microsoft Word, at formatting the finished manuscript.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/scrivenerall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Scrivener<\/a> is a complex if powerful program, and it\u2019s almost impossible to figure out <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/book-formatting\/\">how to format a book with<\/a> Scrivener on your own. Allow us to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"toc\">\n\nIn this article, you will learn:\n\n<ol>\n\n<li>Scrivener\u2019s capabilities for formatting<\/li>\n\n<li>How to format your book in Scrivener<\/li>\n\n<li>What elements you should include<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-scrivener-a-book-formatting-software\">Is Scrivener a Book Formatting Software?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes and no. While <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/scrivenerall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Scrivener<\/a> was not built as <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/book-formatting-software\/\">a formatting software<\/a>, it has acquired a lot of functionality in later releases, especially in Scrivener 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While a lot more complicated than programs like Vellum or <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/Atticus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Atticus<\/a>, it is also quite powerful, and can do virtually anything that either alternative can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only downside is that sometimes it can require a mountain of tutorials, video trainings, and experimentation to get it just right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it can be done. It's just not as intuitive as our primary recommendation: <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/Atticus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Atticus<\/a>. If you haven't checked that out already, take a look at our <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/atticus-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">comprehensive review.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-1-prep-your-manuscript\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#f7782d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Step 1<\/mark>: Prep Your Manuscript<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step in <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-format-a-book\/\">formatting your novel<\/a> is to ensure that the manuscript is prepped correctly. This will simplify the compiling step later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-templates\">Templates<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image shadow\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"629\" height=\"487\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-templates-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Scrivener templates\" class=\"wp-image-21493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-templates-1.jpeg 629w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-templates-1-300x232.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>First, when you are just setting up your Scrivener project, you should make sure to select the Novel template, if that is what you\u2019re doing, but there are built-in templates for Non-fiction and several variations of both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: while there are many templates to choose from, we are going to continue this tutorial using the Novel template. Once you know how to format your novel, it is relatively easy to adapt these steps to non-fiction or other types of books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-manuscript-organization\">Manuscript Organization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few simple steps that should happen while you are writing your book. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Getting your scenes and chapters in order<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arranging the hierarchy and table of contents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensuring each chapter is complete and ready to publish<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-front-and-back-matter\">Front and Back Matter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Novel Scrivener template will come with these, but if not, all you have to do is create folders titled Front Matter, and Back Matter, respectively. You can then add whatever content you intend to include in either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A useful feature here is that you can also setup sub-folders within your front and back matter folders, one for ebooks and one for print books. There are other ways to format, but we\u2019ll stick to these two for the purposes of this article. Rarely will you need anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To start, go to File &gt; Compile. There you will see a dropdown at the top of the pop-up window that says \u201cCompile For:\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If you are looking to format for an ebook, select \u201cePub 3 Ebook (.epub)\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are looking to format for a print version (for uploading to KDP Print or IngramSpark, for example), select \u201cPDF\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image shadow\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"234\" height=\"324\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/choosing-templates-scrivener-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Choosing templates in Scrivener\" class=\"wp-image-21497\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/choosing-templates-scrivener-1.jpeg 234w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/choosing-templates-scrivener-1-217x300.jpeg 217w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Once you have selected either of these, you will see a variety of formats listed on the left-hand side. Let\u2019s walk through each of these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-3a-formatting-an-epub-book-in-scrivener\">Step 3A: Formatting an EPUB Book in Scrivener<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>EPUBs are relatively easy to put together. After you\u2019ve selected the correct format and duplicated it, you\u2019ll need to rename the preset and save it under \u201cMy Formats\u201d. This will enable you to edit and use the same format again if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image border\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-ebook-template-name-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Scrivener ebook template name\" class=\"wp-image-21501\" width=\"892\" height=\"92\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-ebook-template-name-1.jpeg 892w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-ebook-template-name-1-300x31.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-ebook-template-name-1-768x79.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 892px) 100vw, 892px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>There are few modifications you need to make to this format, unless you have very specific needs that are not covered in this tutorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, here are some additional concerns you may need to address when compiling to an EPUB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>EPUBs need a cover image. The basic Novel template that comes with Scrivener will provide a dummy image in the Front Matter of the book, which makes the most sense. Simply swap out that image for one of your own.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You only need to worry about an EPUB file when compiling for an eBook. MOBI is another file that was previously used by Amazon. Scrivener still supports it, but you most likely will not need to export <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-convert-epub-to-mobi\/\">to MOBI<\/a> in order to create a kindle book.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An EPUB should also have a table of contents included in scrivener file. The template you are using, assuming you copied it from the standard EPUB template, should have what you need here. However, it always pays to check the final file and ensure that the table of contents is there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While you will need to check your kindle book for errors, there is not much that you will likely need to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-3b-formatting-a-print-book-in-scrivener\">Step 3B: Formatting a Print Book in Scrivener<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting up the print version will take a bit more work when establishing the <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/book-sizes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">formatting guidelines<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start in the compile window by selecting PDF in the \u201cCompile For\u201d dropdown, then select and duplicate one of the formats on the left side. Currently, Scrivener only has two main paperback formats commonly used in KDP Print and IngramSpark: 5.06\u201d x 7.81\u201d and 6\u201d x 9\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this tutorial, we selected the 6\u201d x 9\u201d paperback and duplicated it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, be sure to rename it and list it under \u201cMy Formats\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We renamed ours as Paperback (5\u201d x 8\u201d) because this is the format that we wanted to create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next we need to edit that format and select \u201cPage Settings\u201d from the edit menu. At the top of these settings you\u2019ll see Page Setup and Margins. These will be important in formatting your book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-margins\">Margins<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For margins, you will need to know the correct layout for whatever book you are trying to produce. This usually involves clear margins on all sides, and an extra-large margin in the inside margin or \u201cgutter\u201d margin.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image shadow\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"297\" height=\"301\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-margins-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Scrivener margins\" class=\"wp-image-21515\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-trim-size\">Trim Size<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image shadow\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-trim-size-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Scrivener trim size\" class=\"wp-image-21511\" width=\"287\" height=\"94\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Trim size is the overall height and width of your book. There are a variety of trim sizes, and you\u2019ll need to adjust them here, unless you're looking for the 6\u201d x 9\u201d format that is already included in Scrivener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/kdp.amazon.com\/en_US\/help\/topic\/GVBQ3CMEQW3W2VL6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon\u2019s guidelines<\/a> for how you should adjust your margins and trim size for KDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-4-check-additional-data\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#f7782d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Step 4<\/mark>: Check Additional Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a number of additional areas that you should check before compiling, to ensure that you\u2019re covering all your bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-metadata\">Metadata<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image shadow\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"372\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-metadata-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Scrivener metadata\" class=\"wp-image-21518\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-metadata-1.jpeg 372w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-metadata-1-300x227.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Metadata is a crucially important step, because the slightest typo can easily mean that your book\u2019s name is spelled wrong across every page of your print book, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: the metadata is not the same as the Title Page of your book, which you should have setup in the initial manuscript. Instead, the metadata is what Scrivener uses along the headers or footers of your book.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find the metadata in the compile settings on the right-hand side, where you\u2019ll see a number of small icons. Click the one that looks like a small tag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That brings up a new set of options that include your book\u2019s name and the author\u2019s name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-front-and-back-matter-1\">Front and Back Matter<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image shadow\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-front-back-matter-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Scrivener front and back matter\" class=\"wp-image-21521\" width=\"372\" height=\"60\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-front-back-matter-1.jpeg 372w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-front-back-matter-1-300x48.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In the compile settings, you\u2019ll see on the bottom-right, a place to add front or back matter. There will be a dropdown available for each that will allow you to select where these come from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why it\u2019s important to have this setup earlier while you\u2019re constructing your novel. If you\u2019ve done this properly, all you need to do is select the appropriate folder. If you\u2019ve created folders specifically for ebook or print versions, you should select the appropriate one here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-5-assign-section-layouts\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#f7782d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Step 5<\/mark>: Assign Section Layouts<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image shadow\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"644\" height=\"582\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-assign-section-layout-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Scrivener assign section to layout\" class=\"wp-image-21525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-assign-section-layout-1.jpeg 644w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/scrivener-assign-section-layout-1-300x271.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>One important step before you compile is to assign section layouts. This area is quite different in Scrivener 3 than in previous versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the bottom-center of the compile settings is a button that says \u201cAssign Section Layouts\u201d. Click on this and you\u2019ll see a list of section types, along with layouts for each one. This is where you\u2019ll select the design for each \u201csection\u201d or element of your book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a fiction book, these <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/parts-of-a-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sections are pretty standard<\/a>. They include things like Chapter Headings, Scenes, Front Matter, Part Headings, Table of Contents, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nice things about Scrivener\u2019s section layouts is that if you change the style for one element, it will change it for all matching elements. That means that all your Chapter Headings, for example, will look uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure that each section type has an assigned section layout. Simply scan through what they have and select what looks good.
