You\u2019ll see whether it\u2019s worth using and what it (if anything) it excels at over other similar tools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t want to read the whole review. Like other proofreading tools, it uses Artificial Intelligence and Data Technology to analyze text for originality, mistakes, style choices, and word choice suggestions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"offer-box\">Even if you have a good proofreading tool, a human editor is best. But how can you know what editors are worth the price? While other tools have integration or downloads,<strong> PaperRater is only available for use on their website<\/strong>. If you\u2019re familiar with the Copyscape plagiarism checker, it\u2019s a similar setup. You go to the website, paste or upload your text, and have the technology do its thing to check it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned above, PaperRater Features include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Plagiarism Detection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grammar Mistake Detection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spelling Mistake Detection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Word Choice Suggestions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Style Suggestions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The way PaperRater works is fine if you\u2019re checking a small amount of text. But if you\u2019re an author looking for a tool that can check your manuscript right in your word processor of choice, this isn\u2019t it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which brings me to the next section on who should use this tool.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-should-use-paperrater\"><strong>Who Should Use PaperRater?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>PaperRater makes no secret of the fact that their service is mostly for college and high school students. And the sale to Barnes & Noble Education in 2018 merely cements this notion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you consider the limitations, such as the 1500-word limit on the free version, you \u200csee what I mean. A college essay of 1500 words would be pretty easy to copy and paste into the PaperRater tool.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, it doesn\u2019t preclude other professionals from using this tool. But it\u2019s not a great option for authors. And not just because of the low word limits. Like other tools that offer free versions, there\u2019s only so much you can do with PaperRater\u2019s basic plan. Still, it\u2019s nice to be able to use it even with the limitations. It may not be worth the money.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you decide, let\u2019s take a look at PaperRater in action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-use-paperrater\"><strong>How to Use PaperRater<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the website looks a little outdated, the free tool is easy to use. You don\u2019t have to sign up or jump through a bunch of hoops to use the free version. But even then, it only takes about fifteen seconds or so. So let's take a look at the results to give you an idea of how well this tool works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-paperrater-plagiarism-checker\"><strong>PaperRater Plagiarism Checker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although I copied and pasted my text from one of my live blog posts, the plagiarism detector said it was 34% original. This is worrisome because it should come up as zero percent original. The good news is that it did list the link to my blog post. There are some free plagiarism checkers out there that are much worse than this one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To give you an idea, I put the same text into Copyscape for a plagiarism check, and it came up saying that 100% of the text matched my article \u2014 meaning it was totally \u201cplagiarized.\u201d This is how a plagiarism checker should work. That\u2019s one mark against PaperRater.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image shadow\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Copyscape-Plagiarism-Checker-Results.png\" alt=\"Copyscape Plagiarism Checker Results\" class=\"wp-image-27926\" style=\"width:770px\" width=\"770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Copyscape-Plagiarism-Checker-Results.png 797w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Copyscape-Plagiarism-Checker-Results-300x44.png 300w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Copyscape-Plagiarism-Checker-Results-768x114.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 797px) 100vw, 797px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-spelling-grammar-and-word-choice\"><strong>Spelling, Grammar, and Word Choice<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The spelling and grammar functions seem to do pretty well on PaperRater. These features are comparable to other proofreading tools. But the word choice function was a little strange.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It flagged the text I put in as having some poor word choice errors. It says I overused words like \u201cI,\u201d \u201cyou,\u201d \u201cthink,\u201d \u201cget,\u201d and a few others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I were writing a college essay, this would be very helpful. But since I\u2019m writing an informal, second-person blog post, I\u2019ve decided to use words like these. Blog and essay writing are two very different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-style-choices\"><strong>Style Choices<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It also pinged my text under the \u201cStyle\u201d heading for two things: transitional words and sentence complexity. It suggests that I use more words like \u201cconsequently,\u201d \u201ctherefore,\u201d \u201cfurthermore,\u201d \u201cmoreover,\u201d and the like.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, this comes down to who the tool is for. English teachers may want to see these transition words used in an essay, but they don\u2019t belong in an informal blog post. (At least, not a lot of them.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, the sentence complexity suggestion is interesting. PaperRater suggests that my sentences are too simple and short. However, as a blogger, I know that short, simple sentences do much better online \u2014 not only for ranking on search engines but also for readability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PaperRater does check for passive voice and varied sentence beginnings, which are both great things to know about your writing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-features\"><strong>Other Features<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>PaperRater also offers automated scoring. It pulls up a letter grade to let you know how it <em>thinks<\/em> the paper will be graded. Plus, it tells you if you\u2019re using enough complex words in the \u201cVocabulary\u201d section.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, these tools are great for checking an academic paper, but not so useful for those of us who aren\u2019t writing essays in college or high school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-i-like-about-paperrater\"><strong>What I Like About PaperRater<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>PaperRater would\u2019ve been incredibly helpful when I was still in college. I really could\u2019ve used a free tool like this. But there are a few things that are helpful for me today. These include the spelling and grammar checker, and the style checker.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-spelling-and-grammar-checker\"><strong>1. Spelling and Grammar Checker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>PaperRater\u2019s spelling and grammar checking functions seem comparable to other proofreading software on the market. And \u200cthat you can use it for free is helpful.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it\u2019s not ideal to have to copy and paste your text in, it\u2019s better than nothing. And while you\u2019re at it, you can check what the helpful style checker says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-style-checker\"><strong>2. Style Checker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite some confusion with the style checker, I did find some helpful tips in this section of the tool. PaperRater checks for passive voice and sentence starts. It will flag you if you use too much passive voice. Likewise, it will tell you if you start too many sentences in the same way. For me, these are valuable tips that definitely help improve my writing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-low-priced-premium-version\"><strong>3. Low Priced Premium Version<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In my case, the premium version of this tool wouldn\u2019t be worth the money. But for a college student who will write a lot of papers, it\u2019s a pretty good deal. It doesn\u2019t really do anything that Grammarly or <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/prowritingaid-review\">ProWritingAid<\/a> can\u2019t, but it\u2019s cheaper than both options. Something to think about if you\u2019re doing mostly academic writing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-i-don-t-like-about-paperrater\"><strong>What I Don\u2019t Like About PaperRater<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a general proofreading tool, PaperRater isn\u2019t great. Here\u2019s what I didn\u2019t like about it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-inaccurate-plagiarism-checker\"><strong>1. Inaccurate Plagiarism Checker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The little experiment I did with the PaperRater plagiarism checker made me think that it\u2019s not the most accurate tool for this. Copyscape does a much better job. So that alone tells me that I wouldn\u2019t want to use it for checking if my blog posts are accidentally plagiarizing other sites on the web.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-limited-to-short-texts-only\"><strong>2. Limited to Short Texts Only<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The free version of PaperRater can only check 3,000 words at a time. The premium version checks 6,000. For those of us looking for a proofreading tool to help us with our book writing, those word counts are much too low. This, combined with the decidedly academic tilt to the tool, makes it a bad option for anyone who is not writing a relatively short academic paper.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-geared-toward-students\"><strong>3. Geared Toward Students<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>PaperRater doesn\u2019t market itself as a general proofreading tool, as far as I can tell. They make no secret of the fact that it\u2019s geared toward students. And for someone who wants a good proofreading tool for my blog posts and fiction writing, this is a con.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the suggestions it makes for writing improvement are the opposite of the best blog writing practices. So as a general proofreading tool, PaperRater has very limited uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-no-integration\"><strong>4. No Integration<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you're looking for something to use with Google Docs or Microsoft Word, PaperRater isn't it. You can only use the tool on the website. And the word-count limitations will make longer texts harder to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusion\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re a student looking for a good proofreading tool (either free or paid), I would absolutely check PaperRater out. <strong>But if you\u2019re <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/best-book-writing-software\/\"><strong>writing books<\/strong><\/a><strong> or blog posts, I can\u2019t recommend this tool.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the premium version is cheap, it has some serious limitations. These include the 6,000-word limit per search, the fact that it doesn\u2019t integrate with any other writing tools, and the academic-geared programming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><a class=\"buy-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paperrater.com\/free_paper_grader\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollower noopener\">Check Out PaperRater<\/a><\/center>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have to pay a little more for a premium version of Grammarly or <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/ProWritingAid\/Blog20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ProWritingAid<\/a>, but at least you\u2019ll know you\u2019re getting an all-around proofreading tool that doesn\u2019t have these same limitations.&nbsp;<em>Want to find the best proofreading tool for authors?
