There is a lot of confusion between endnotes and footnotes, and what the difference is between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The short answer:<\/strong> they are the same except that footnotes appear at the bottom of the page and endnotes appear at the end of your chapter or book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there is a little more nuance to it than that. And I'll dig into that in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So I've been writing and formatting books for a long time. 10+ years as of this writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And yes, of course, that includes footnotes and endnotes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What Is a Footnote?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    A footnote<\/a> is a citation made inside the text, usually with a superscript number, that leads to an expanded note at the bottom of your page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Basically, if you see a superscript number in your book, and at the bottom of the page is more information related to that topic, that is a footnote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What Is an Endnote?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    An endnote<\/a> is very similar to a footnote. It involves an in-text citation in the middle of your manuscript, again, usually with a superscript number, that points to more information later on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    However, an endnote is not found at the bottom of your page. Your endnote will usually be found either at the end of each chapter, or at the end of the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You should decide whether to have your endnotes at the end of each chapter or at the end of the book depending on the number of endnotes that you intend to have. If you intend to have many endnotes, then you should place them at the end of each chapter. If you have only a few endnotes, you can collect them all in one place at the end of your book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Footnotes Versus Endnotes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Footnotes and endnotes have a lot of similarities and a few key differences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
