You\u2019d be amazed at how many websites have pirated or claim to have pirated your book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There it is&#8230;sitting there, being given away for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All those sales&#8230;lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worse yet, most of these sites have no contact information and probably aren\u2019t even located in your country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how do you protect yourself against these pirates and protect your rights?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, I want to show you the legal, safe, and extra awesome way that anyone can regain their book from these pirates with some cunning tactics that only the most advanced computer nerds know how to employ.&nbsp; Even if you haven't <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywritingtips.com\/write-non-fiction-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">written that non-fiction book<\/a> or are in the process of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/parts-of-a-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">laying out your book<\/a>, this is great to know for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t worry, this will be simple&#8230;even for the most tech-challenged readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"toc\">\nIn this article, you\u2019ll learn:\n<ol><li>When to act and when to leave it alone<\/li><li>The steps to get the pirates&nbsp;to release your book<\/li><li>How to get Google to slap them around<\/li><li>And more\u2026<\/li><\/ol>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-before-you-get-justice\">Before You Get Justice\u2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ebook piracy is where a website or person has taken a copy of your book and placed it on the internet in order for people to download it for free. However, in most cases, they actually&nbsp;don't have it and are just luring you in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, before you go all Klingon and try to serve them a dish best served cold, I\u2019m going to give a recommendation that <strong>SHOULD apply to 99% of you:&nbsp;<\/strong>If you find out someone is offering your book for free on their website, <strong>you should just leave it alone and move on.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But why? Isn't ebook piracy bad?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Most of the time, they don\u2019t actually&nbsp;have your book. &nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They scraped <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-title-a-book-with-good-book-titles\/\">your title<\/a> off Amazon &#8211; seeing that&nbsp;it was popular or potentially popular &#8211; and are only lying by saying the book is available in their archives. &nbsp;This is for one of two reasons. &nbsp;Either:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>They want the searcher to pay their subscription in order&nbsp;to get the &#8220;free&#8221; books<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They will \u201csend you the book\u201d but it will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TETyTx7phq8\">actually&nbsp;be a virus<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>So, in the end, you\u2019re actually safer if you don\u2019t look for these pirates&#8230;and if you do, make sure you're armed with my ebook piracy steps below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The amount of work it will take to get your book removed is usually not worth it.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not a knock on you or your book, but the number of sales that&nbsp;you would lose because of that book is probably so negligible that you shouldn\u2019t even waste your time with it. &nbsp;Most people who go looking for free books probably aren\u2019t the type that would actually&nbsp;pay for one. &nbsp;So you really aren\u2019t losing any money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, it's important to note that sometimes ebook piracy can be a good thing. &nbsp;As my good friend Tim Grahl shows, it can <a href=\"https:\/\/booklaunch.com\/ebook-piracy-and-book-marketing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">actually&nbsp;help you out<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I get it. &nbsp;It\u2019s just the sheer fact that someone is either&nbsp;lying to people or conning them out of money, and using your book to do it. &nbsp;You\u2019re out for justice!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sw-tweet-clear\"><\/div><a class=\"swp_CTT style1\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share?text=ARRRRR%21+Finally...a+way%26nbsp%3Bto+deal+with+ebook+piracy+%23Ebooks&url=https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/ebook-piracy\/\" data-link=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share?text=ARRRRR%21+Finally...a+way%26nbsp%3Bto+deal+with+ebook+piracy+%23Ebooks&url=https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/ebook-piracy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"sw-click-to-tweet\"><span class=\"sw-ctt-text\">ARRRRR! Finally...a way&nbsp;to deal with ebook piracy #Ebooks<\/span><span class=\"sw-ctt-btn\">Click To Tweet<i class=\"sw swp_twitter_icon\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Well if that is the case, then there are two ways to kick some&nbsp;book pirate booty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Follow the steps below in order&nbsp;to get them removed or hurt their website, without getting a lawyer involved<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/defendox.com\/services\/anti_piracy_publishing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hire a service<\/a> that will save you time and headaches by doing all of that for you, so you can write your book<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Both of which I discuss below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading instruction-box\" id=\"h-step-1-contact-the-writer-owner-editor\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#f7782d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Step 1<\/mark>: Contact The Writer\/Owner\/Editor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably the most obvious of steps, yet often overlooked and more effective than you\u2019d think with these cheap book thieves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because they are probably not making much money off of your book specifically, so instead of endangering their website\/business (for fear that&nbsp;you are savvy with the ways of the Internet force and have read this article), they\u2019ll acquiesce to your request and remove the one single&nbsp;page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what if they don\u2019t have a contact page or way for you to contact them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s okay because we\u2019re going to use Whois to find out all we need to know about this website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"offer-box\">NOTE: For this, I\u2019m going to use a pretty&nbsp;cool fiction website made by my good friend, Shaunta Grimes, called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whatisaplot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What Is A Plot<\/a>. &nbsp;How good of a friend? &nbsp;Well, let's just&nbsp;say <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/i-am-disgusting-i-am-gross-i-am-ugly_us_58078486e4b00483d3b5cdfd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I photo-bombed her Huffington Post picture<\/a>. &nbsp;But rest assured,&nbsp;she is not a pirate.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this, navigate to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whois.com\/whois\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.whois.com\/whois\/<\/a> and type in the pirate website\u2019s domain name.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"644\" height=\"177\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/WhoIsLookup.png\" alt=\"WhoIs-Lookup-ebook-piracy\" class=\"wp-image-3201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/WhoIsLookup.png 644w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/WhoIsLookup-300x82.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Whois is awesome because it not only lists their personal contact information (unless they paid for privacy), but also lists where their website\u2019s domain is registered, who their hosting service is, when they bought the domain, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, it\u2019s useful for figuring out information about any website out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that information is going to be important for these next couple steps. If it is found that they are hosting illegal sites and are not in compliance, they could get shut down and lose their business. Plus, most of them don\u2019t want illegal activity on their servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how do we find out who their hosting service is?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simple! &nbsp;We go back to Whois Lookup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, to find out who their hosting service is, you want to scroll down in Whois until you see \u201cName Servers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"544\" height=\"244\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/NameServer.png\" alt=\"Name-Server-Ebook-piracy\" class=\"wp-image-3204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/NameServer.png 544w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/NameServer-300x135.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 544px) 100vw, 544px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>These servers usually look like &#8220;ns1.somehostingcompany.com.&#8221; &nbsp;In the example above, it is Bluehost.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, you\u2019d want to go to \u201csomehostingcompany.com\u201d and look for a \u201cContact Us\u201d form or an \u201cAbuse\u201d form and file your complaint there.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"746\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ContactUs.png\" alt=\"ContactUs\" class=\"wp-image-3205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ContactUs.png 746w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ContactUs-300x140.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 746px) 100vw, 746px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>When you contact them, be sure to use your best legalese and state&nbsp;the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>The violations occurred by the website owner<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specific URL you want to be taken down with a \u201cfix it or else\u201d type statement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inform that you tried contacting the owner of the site directly but&nbsp;they were unresponsive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your next step will be to file a DMCA (more on this later)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading instruction-box\" id=\"h-step-3-contact-the-registrar\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#f7782d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Step 3<\/mark>: Contact the Registrar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the scourge of the Internet actually&nbsp;have their own hosting service (you can basically&nbsp;turn any old computer into a web server), so sometimes trying to contact their \u201chosting service\u201d will do no good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that\u2019s okay. &nbsp;We can kick it up a notch because even if they have their own hosting, they CAN\u2019T have their own Registrar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this, we again look at the Whois info and locate their \u201cRegistrar Abuse Contact Email\u201d and\/or \u201cRegistrar Abuse Contact Phone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"723\" height=\"179\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/RegistrantAbuseContact.png\" alt=\"Ebook-piracy-Registrant-Abuse-Contact\" class=\"wp-image-3202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/RegistrantAbuseContact.png 723w, https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/RegistrantAbuseContact-300x74.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 723px) 100vw, 723px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>If a phone number is available, it\u2019s best to pick up the phone and contact the Registrar with your complaint. &nbsp;Since its a copyright infringement, you have a decent shot at getting the information removed pronto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If for some reason,&nbsp;you don\u2019t get through to them on the phone or no phone number is listed, then send an email to the Registrar Abuse Contact Email with the compiled information and close your email with the statement \u201cMy next step is to follow through with a DMCA request since you are dealing with stolen content.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That ought to get \u2018em!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading instruction-box\" id=\"h-step-4-enter-the-dmca-dragon\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#f7782d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Step 4<\/mark>: Enter the DMCA Dragon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If nothing has happened yet, then it is time to roll up your sleeves and slap them around for real. In this case, a dish served cold with a side of DMCA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<strong>Digital Millennium Copyright Act<\/strong>&nbsp;(DMCA) is supposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.copyright.gov\/reports\/studies\/dmca\/dmca_executive.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">protect the owners of content from copyright infringement on the web<\/a>. It\u2019s basically a formal action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, why not just start with this? &nbsp;Because DMCAs are supposed to be the last resort against ebook piracy. &nbsp;It\u2019s the \u201cI\u2019ve tried everything and they didn\u2019t listen so here comes the boom\u201d move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sw-tweet-clear\"><\/div><a class=\"swp_CTT style1\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share?text=This+is+how+you+can+take+down+the+Pirates+who+steal+your+%23book%2C+Matey%21+%23WritersLife&url=https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/ebook-piracy\/\" data-link=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share?text=This+is+how+you+can+take+down+the+Pirates+who+steal+your+%23book%2C+Matey%21+%23WritersLife&url=https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/ebook-piracy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"sw-click-to-tweet\"><span class=\"sw-ctt-text\">This is how you can take down the Pirates who steal your #book, Matey! #WritersLife<\/span><span class=\"sw-ctt-btn\">Click To Tweet<i class=\"sw swp_twitter_icon\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the hosting services and registrars have a specific page for submitting a DMCA. &nbsp;The best way to find this is to do a Google search with the \u201cName of the Company\u201d + \u201cDMCA\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is an example of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hostgator.com\/dmca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Host Gator\u2019s DMCA page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the company you're looking for&nbsp;doesn't have a DMCA, then you\u2019ll need to create your own and send it to them or their legal department. You can also access the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copyright.gov\/onlinesp\/list\/a_agents.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Copyright.gov website list of companies<\/a> and hit them there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When filling out a formal copyright claim, you\u2019ll need to list some of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Your full name and contact information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exactly who you are filing this DMCA against (website owner, host, registrant, etc. &#8211; you need to do a separate one for each)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a screenshot of the blatant abuse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide proof that&nbsp;you attempted to contact the violator<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sign it yourself (electronic signatures are sufficient)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>State that&nbsp;you are complaining in \u201cgood faith\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>State that \u201cunder penalty of perjury, the information contained&nbsp;in the notification is accurate\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>State that&nbsp;you have the right to submit this DMCA because you are the copyright owner or the owner\u2019s agent.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Here you can find&nbsp;a couple of templates to&nbsp;use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcanerin.com\/copyright-law-seo-part-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DMCA Notification Template<br><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/support.scribd.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/210128926-DMCA-copyright-infringement-takedown-notification-email-template\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DMCA Template from our dear friends at Scribd<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, to help this step move in a better way, be sure to check out my article on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/book-copyright-page-examples-ebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Book Copyright pages<\/a> and what to put in them. Thankfully there are a few services that make this possible, though I haven't had the chance to personally test them myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you're looking for a service to help out, I recommend one of these options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/muso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MUSO <\/a>&#8211; $7\/month per book, or $70\/month for everything<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/pirat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pirat.io<\/a> &#8211; contact for pricing, supposedly has a discount for authors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mention above, using a service like these might not be worth the time or expense for 99% of authors, but if you really want the service, the above options should work for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But What About Blasty?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have heard that there's a program out there that can blast these pirates straight out of the water. And yes, there is one&#8211;or should I say <em>was<\/em>&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was called Blasty, and it was the forefront of anti ebook piracy. But as of 2019&#8230;Blasty is no longer blasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program used to hunt down these ebook pirates and with a single click do all the Google legwork for you. And that alone was worth the cost of the program. However, things went terribly wrong for Blasty. In 2019, the company seemed to implode. First, it removed all signs of support and customer service. And then, reports of fraudulent charges started appearing throughout the Blasty customer base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfpublishingadvice.org\/blasty-watchdog-advisory\/\">ALLi even did some extensive reaching out<\/a> to the company and eventually downgraded their status from recommended to cautionary.
