If you\u2019ve heard of ScribeCount before, you\u2019ve probably heard through Philippa Werner, the public face of the company. Randall Wood is a writer, and he set out to make something that indie authors would love. In short, he wanted to create \u201cthe author's best friend.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I think this tool is certainly useful, I'll let you decide if it will end up being your best friend or not. (If you like the numbers side of self-publishing, I'm betting it will.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a relatively new tool, and some features are currently in beta, but even as-is, <strong>ScribeCount is a tool I\u2019m sure many authors will love.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-scribecount-works\">How ScribeCount Works<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To use ScribeCount, you need to sign up for an account (there is a free trial\u2014more on that below). Once you\u2019re signed up, you just need to install the browser extension.<strong> Currently, they have extensions for Google Chrome, Firefox, and Edge<\/strong>. At the time of this writing, they're working on one for Safari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you're signed up, you can select which platforms you want to link with your account. They use a three-tier system. And while they're not the cheapest in terms of pricing, they are fairly competitive. Here's the rundown:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>$9.99 per month for authors earning less than $1,000 a month.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$19.99 per month for authors earning more than $1,000 a month<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$185 a year when paid yearly instead of monthly. This comes out to 15% off the $19.99 monthly price.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The nice thing is, no matter which tier you're at, you get access to all the features. They don't hold any back for the $9.99-a-month tier&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-there-a-free-trial\">Is There a Free Trial?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you're familiar with Book Report, you know that authors making less than $1,000 a month use the tool for free. And while ScribeCount doesn't have this option, <strong>they do offer a 14-day free trial.<\/strong> You don't have to put a credit card on file or anything\u2014you just sign up and link whichever accounts you like.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you like it better than Book Report (or whatever system you have in place) after 14 days, then you pay to keep using it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-scribecount-features-rundown\">ScribeCount Features Rundown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>ScribeCount has a lot of features, and they're working on bringing more to the table. But for this article, I'll go over the major ones that I find the most useful. Let's dive in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-all-markets-at-a-glance\">All Markets at a Glance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By far the most useful feature for any wide author is the ScribeCount dashboard<\/strong>. But there are other useful features on the dashboard, including simple graphs on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Amazon and Wide Sales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kindle Unlimited vs Sales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Free vs Paid Units<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Formats Percentage&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It also populates the data in a spreadsheet, which you can easily export. <\/strong>Of course, you can choose certain parameters by which to view the data. You can choose a set date range (the default is the current month), but you can also view by platform, marketplace (US, UK, Canada, etc.), book, and date. This allows you to see at a glance what you've earned without signing into those various retailers or going to your bank account to dig up the information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-scribecount-pros\">ScribeCount Pros<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There's a lot to like about ScribeCount, but here are some of the things I like best.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-clean-interface\">Clean Interface<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this plug-in software program presents you with a TON of data, <strong>it does it in such a way that's not totally overwhelming<\/strong> (although it can be a little overwhelming, especially for new authors). Still, this is no easy feat. You don't feel like you're bombarded every time you sign in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So even if you don't love the numbers side of your author career (yet), you can still manage this tool easily until you do learn to love the data!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tracks-from-almost-all-major-platforms\">Tracks From Almost All Major Platforms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you're a wide author, I can't see any <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/book-sales-tracker\/\"><strong>other sales tracking tool<\/strong><\/a><strong> being as useful as ScribeCount.<\/strong> The number of platforms they can pull data from is amazing. And they're constantly working to bring you more. For this reason alone, the tool has the potential to save wide authors a lot of time\u2014certainly well worth the relatively low cost.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sort-your-data-your-way\">Sort Your Data Your Way<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>ScribeCount seems to have thought of almost everything when it comes to sorting your data. You can check things by platform, geographical area, marketplace, books, series, date, custom tags, and many more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This allows you to really drill down and look at your data any way you want.<\/strong> This is essential for seeing if your marketing efforts, social media activity, and even your <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/email-for-authors\/\">mailing list campaigns<\/a> are working as well as you want them to.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-daily-summary-email\">Daily Summary Email<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ScribeCount sends you a daily summary email of the previous day\u2019s sales.<\/strong> This is a nice feature, allowing some of your data to come to you. Additionally, they show how many pre-orders have been placed for the previous day (if any). You have the option to turn these emails off if you don\u2019t want them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-scribecount-cons\">ScribeCount Cons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although I'm definitely in favor of this tool, there are a couple of cons I found while using the software.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-no-free-version\">No Free Version<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although you can try this tool free for 14 days, <strong>there is no free version.<\/strong> So even if you're making only a couple of hundred dollars a month in royalties, you'll have to pay $9.99 per month after the free trial. I would like to see them do something like Book Report, where they allow you to use it for free under a certain threshold.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-so-many-features\">So Many Features<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While it's nice to have so many features, it can also be a hazard if you're not careful.<strong> Playing around in ScribeCount could become a time suck<\/strong>, almost like social media or watching YouTube videos. It may seem like you're working in the tool, when in reality you're just killing time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you like data, then this certainly is a risk.
