Famous authors like Hugh Howey have even turned down big time publishing deals because he can make more money on his own thanks to KDP. &nbsp;Also, not going to lie, but Hugh is sort of the Amazon poster boy. &nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, while this sounds great, because of the freedom to publish, the rate at which books are entering the market has increased dramatically over the years. &nbsp;There\u2019s now more competition. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By Allowing authors to enter the market on their own, Publishers increasingly looking at an author's record as an indication of whether or not to sign someone. &nbsp;Imagine this: two authors go into a <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/how-to-start-a-publishing-company\/\">publishing company<\/a> with a book in a similar niche. &nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Author A: Has never published before, but the book is very good.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Author B\u2019s book isn\u2019t as good as Author A\u2019s, but still decent. &nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Author B has self-published a couple of times and has sold over 40,000 units as well as collected an email list of over 30,000 people. &nbsp;<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, now that we know we need to improve our marketing capability, how do we do that? &nbsp;Well there are two methods to book marketing: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Method 1<\/strong>: Market your book to an existing buyers market<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Method 2<\/strong>: Find the market and turn them into a buyers market<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\r\n<section class=\"standard-cta testimonial nohover bottom-left\" id=\"cta-block_60a2b7aa18238\">\r\n    <div class=\"cta-inner row\">\r\n                    <div class=\"cta-media col-md-4\">\r\n                                    <div class=\"cta-media-inner\">\r\n                    \r\n                        <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/rocket-in-content\" alt=\"Check It Out Here\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">                        \r\n                        \r\n                        \r\n                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Support-sml.png\" alt=\"KDP Rocket Shirt\" height=\"187\" width=\"350\">\r\n                        \r\n                        <\/a>                    <\/div>\r\n                            <\/div>\r\n        \r\n        <div class=\"cta-body col-md-8\" style=\"text-align:center;\">  \r\n                            <a class=\"cta-heading\" href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/rocket-in-content\" alt=\"Check It Out Here\">\r\n                            <h3>We\u2019re Here to Help!<\/h3>\r\n                            <\/a>\r\n                        \r\n            <p>See why Publisher Rocket users love our support team.<\/p>\n            <a class=\"offer-button\" href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/rocket-in-content\" alt=\"Check It Out Here\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">Check It Out Here<\/a>        <\/div>\r\n\r\n            <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, method 1 is the easier of the two. &nbsp;This is about understanding what it is that people want, what genres are hot right now, and what phrases people are typing into Amazon when shopping for their next book. &nbsp;Once you know this, it\u2019s just about getting your book in front of this market while they\u2019re shopping on Amazon, itunes, and other <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/e35-how-to-sell-more-on-book-markets-other-than-amazon\/\">book markets<\/a>. This is through things like keywords, category selection, AMS ads and more.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, method 1 Is about understanding what the market wants, and creating a book for that market &#8211; then just using that market to sell it to. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Method 2 is a lot harder. &nbsp;It\u2019s finding a market somewhere else that is a good fit for your book, getting their attention, and then bringing them to your book. &nbsp;This is a lot harder than it sounds because it takes some kind of marketing skill in order to do those three parts effectively (find them, get their attention and then convince them to stop doing what they were doing and buy). &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Method 2 consists of things like Facebook ads, forums, social media, and other things. &nbsp;Also, this works out for those authors who already have a large following and email list. &nbsp;They just create their next book and then inform their fans through email of where to go to purchase the book. &nbsp;Get it: Find them, get their attention and then convince them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-book-marketing-method-1-example\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Book Marketing Method 1 Example: <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To give you an example of how these two work, let\u2019s start with Method 1. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back when I first started writing, I was doing market research. &nbsp;I had been using Evernote for a long time and wanted to write a book on how to use the program. &nbsp;Because I was doing Method 1, I realized, i wasn\u2019t the only one who had thought about writing that book. &nbsp;There were hundreds of books. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The competition was TOO great and a new author like me, without the tools of method 2 by my side, could never beat out the others. &nbsp;So, I did more research and found out that there were a significant amount of people going to Amazon and typing in phrases into the search bar like \u201cEvernote for students\u201d &nbsp;\u201cEvernote for project managers\u201d and \u201cEvernote for Lawyers.\u201d &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking to see if there were books on Amazon that addressed these three different markets, I found out&#8230;nope. Not one. &nbsp;So, I could have written just another book on Evernote and then compete against all the hundreds of others. &nbsp;Or, I could write three books specifically for those three markets and be the only book in town to address those market\u2019s needs. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe if I had had the skills or assets of Method 2, like say a website that brought in a lot of traffic of people who wanted to learn how to use Evernote, I could have competed and beaten the other authors competing for the Highly Searched for but Highly competitive term of just \u201cEvernote.\u201d &nbsp;But I didn\u2019t. &nbsp;So I find a way to tailor my potential book to an existing market that didn\u2019t find what they were wanting to buy. &nbsp;(on a side note, this was research I had done years ago and never got around to writing those book &#8211; I totally missed my opportunity because well&#8230;the market changed). &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, that\u2019s method 1, let\u2019s look at an example of Method 2.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-book-marketing-method-2-example\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Book Marketing Method 2 Example:<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I was working with Pat Flynn of SmartPassiveIncome.com, he was about to launch his book, Will It Fly. &nbsp;For Pat, his greatest marketing strength was Method 2. &nbsp;I don\u2019t know his exact numbers but I\u2019d be SUPER surprised if he didn\u2019t have over 100k email subscribers. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honestly, Pat could have written a book about how he puts his pants one leg at a time, and I, someone who\u2019s on his email list and buys all of his stuff, would have totally bought it. &nbsp;Pat, through his podcast, email, website, and social media, has the ability to grab the attention of his followers and fans, and easily point them to his latest book, and most importantly, convince them to buy.
