Over 10 years so far, and counting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that's not the real reason, because there are plenty of authors who have lots of experience, but know next to nothing about the different parts of a book, or book formatting in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The real reason you should trust me is because I actually created my own formatting software that solved all my problems. I called it Atticus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this isn't meant to be a sales pitch. I just want to make sure it's clear that I know what I'm talking about. The amount of research that went into not only formatting my own books, but also creating a formatting software is huge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I researched everything, which led me to learn all about every. single. part. of. a. book. And there were a lot more than I realized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And of course, that includes Copyright Pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if all that makes sense, hopefully you'll come along with me as show you everything I've learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Side Note: All These Templates Are Available in Atticus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, if you own Atticus, creating these copyright templates are incredibly simple. Your book cannot be copied without permission. This page also contains info helpful for distributors, librarians, retailers, and booksellers.<br><br>The copyright page goes on the back of the <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/free-book-title-generator-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">title page<\/a> (the verso) in the front matter. Read my article on <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/parts-of-a-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">front matter and back matter<\/a> for more info.<br><br>Multiple elements of a copyright page serve various purposes.<br><br>Traditionally published books contain a lot of publisher information, so readers can order more books from the author or publisher. Self-published authors often put their <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/author-website\/\">author website<\/a> instead.<br><br>A disclaimer can absolve you of legal liability concerning parts of your book. For instance, if your recipe book calls for eggs, you may include a disclaimer that eating raw eggs can lead to disease.<br><br>The edition number and printer\u2019s key may be significant for book collectors down the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"offer-box\">Copyright adds legitimacy to a book, and so do reviews. Thankfully, there's a new tool that will notify you when you get a new review, and also help clue you in to any book scams that might be happening.<center><a class=\"offer-button-box\" href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/click\/readerscout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Check Out ReaderScout<\/a><\/center><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-you-need-a-copyright-page\">Do you need a copyright page?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, you need a copyright page if you want to add an extra layer of protection to your book \u2014 whether it\u2019s fiction, nonfiction, a bestseller, or a book that sells 20 copies.<br><br>If you don\u2019t have a copyright page, your book is still copyrighted. You don\u2019t technically need a special page to copyright your book. It\u2019s copyrighted from the moment you write it.<br><br>However, without the copyright page, your ownership may be harder to prove in a court of law.<br><br>A copyright page discourages plagiarism and announces you as the owner. Think of a \u201cNo Trespassing\u201d sign. Without it, you still aren\u2019t allowed to trespass. But the sign reinforces the idea.<br><br>Also, legal disclaimers can absolve you of any responsibility concerning certain parts of the book.<br><br>All you need on your copyright page is a <strong>copyright notice<\/strong> and a <strong>rights reserved notice.<\/strong> Like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"blue-box\"><center><b>\u00a9 2021 Dave Chesson. Not all formatting software does this automatically, so be sure to double check (and I'll tell you my formatting software recommendation in a moment).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to using any of the templates listed above, a copyright page should also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Come right after the Title page<\/strong> (basically it's the second thing you will ever see in a book).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The text should be formatted to <strong>align on the bottom-left<\/strong> (for print). Some publishers will center it, but it should definitely float at the bottom of the page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Have a smaller font<\/strong>. Most copyright pages have a smaller font than the rest of the book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you're using Microsoft Word or Google Docs, you will need to format this page manually, which can be a pain. Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myidentifiers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MyIdentifiers.com<\/a> to get your official ISBN.<br><br>Pro tip: If you think you\u2019ll be publishing more books (or more versions of your book) down the road, I\u2019d recommend buying a set of 10 ISBNs as a package right away. You\u2019ll get a steep discount that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-i-need-an-isbn-if-i-don-t-live-in-america\">Do I need an ISBN if I don\u2019t live in America?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, you need an ISBN in multiple countries besides America. Go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isbn-international.org\/agencies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International ISBN Agency<\/a> to get your international ISBN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-library-of-congress-control-number\">4. Library of Congress Control Number<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN) is a free number you can get that facilitates libraries cataloging your book. Authors can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/publish\/pcn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apply online<\/a> to the Preassigned Control Number (PCN) program.<br><br>This is only necessary if you want your book shelved in libraries. A disclaimer helps protect the writer and publishing company from potential liability.<br><br>An entire book could be written on disclaimers alone. Because our society is increasingly prone to suing at every opportunity, book disclaimers have become a lot more common.<br><br>Some genres, like investing or health, might require specific language to stay compliant with the SEC.<br><br>For some sample disclaimer language, look inside other books of your genre published by <a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/e63-marketers-coffee-publishing-companies-deals-with-anna-david\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">traditional publishing companies<\/a> large enough to have a legal staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A legal disclaimer in your book copyright page doesn\u2019t have to be long. CIP (Cataloging in Publication) Data Block<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most self-published eBook authors won\u2019t include a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/publish\/cip\/faqs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CIP data block<\/a>. A Cataloging In Publication data block (CIP) is not required to publish or sell a book.<br><br>The Library of Congress can issue a CIP data block to authors. It is not something you can create for yourself. However, if you\u2019re a self-publisher, you are not eligible to obtain a CIP data block.<br><br>You can, however, pay to have a P-CIP (Publisher\u2019s Catalog-in-Publication) data block generated for you. Having P-CIP data might make your book look more professional. It costs anywhere from $60-$100 and can be done by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cipblock.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CIPblock.com<\/a>.<br><br>Frankly, the only people interested in seeing your CIP data will be librarians. CIP data exists to help them categorize (\u201ccatalog\u201d) your book in the library more quickly and easily. If you're published, you can obtain your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bac-lac.gc.ca\/eng\/services\/cip\/Pages\/cip.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free CIP data<\/a> by filling out their form <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bac-lac.gc.ca\/eng\/services\/cip\/Pages\/application-forms.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<br><br>If you are located outside of Canada, check with your country\u2019s local copyright laws to make the right choice about CIP data for your copyright page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-ordering-information\">10. Ordering Information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The ordering information section includes info for people or organizations wishing to order more copies of your book. Printer\u2019s Key<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The printer\u2019s key is not typical for self-published books or eBooks.<br><br>Ever wonder what that strange, long string of numbers float along near the bottom of the copyright page means? Those numbers are actually there for the publisher\u2019s production department. They represent the printing number (or sometimes, the printing year).<br><br>Every publisher has its own unique method. Typically, they are in descending order, from left to right. However, they can be in ascending or even in random order.<br><br>They were initially put there so that the book\u2019s printing plates wouldn\u2019t need to be remade with each reprint. The applicable number was simply removed from the plate.<br><br>However, as digital printing and ebooks take over, these are likely to go extinct.<br><br>Side note: These numbers are helpful for book collectors. Just look for the lowest number on the list; that\u2019s the printing you have.<br><br>Another note: A printer\u2019s key is different from the edition number.
